Zambia held the 2016 General Elections and Referendum illegally, Mike Mulongoti has disclosed.
Mulongoti, the People’s Party leader said in an interview that the last elections that were held along side the National Referendum were fraudulent and illegal because the electoral statutes were only issued after the voting event.
“The message is clear…the last elections were quite fraudulent. And it is very interesting that even the electoral statutes were not in place. So we held elections illegally because the electoral statute only came after the elections. The matter is in court but we held polls without the law. The election itself was illegal,” Mulongoti lamented.
He regretted that there was a lot of lawlessness during the last elections.
“You saw what we went through. Fraudulent behavior, unlawfulness and everything you can point to leading to wrong doing,” the people’s party leader said.
Mulongoti has since challenged the Patriotic Front(PF) Government to start reviewing the electoral system in readiness for the 2021 General Elections.
Mulongoti who certified Government Printers ready to print ballot papers in his capacity as Minister in the MMD regime said the electoral process as it is cannot be trusted to hold credible elections.
Asked whether he is not scared that what happened in the last elections can repeat itself in 2021 polls, the People’s Party leader said the opposition has an obligation to pressurize Government to make reforms to the electoral process before the 2021 polls.
