ALLIANCE for Better Zambia (ABZ) president Frank Bwalya says he is supporting President Lungu because he has demonstrated political will to unite Zambians and give them a new constitution.
Fr Bwalya said during the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) Radio 2 breakfast show yesterday that President Lungu has introduced politics of goodwill which should be supported and appreciated by all citizens.
He said it is surprising that the Grand Coalition has failed to appreciate President Lungu’s commitment to giving Zambians a constitution for which the coalition was established.
“It is surprising the Grand Coalition is alleging that I am against having a referendum as a means of adopting the country’s new constitution. All I am saying is that it will be more expensive to hold the referendum when provisions of the constitution can be amended through Parliament,” he said.
Fr Bwalya said conducting a referendum is expensive because it involves having a national census which requires a lot of money.
He said it will not be possible to conduct a referendum, which is likely to go to next year when the country is scheduled to have its tripartite elections.“Zambia does not have money to have four elections in the short space of time coming from having a presidential election, then to a census, aeferendum and presidential and general election in the same year 2016,” Fr Bwalya said.
