NORTHERN Technical College (NORTEC) in Ndola has introduced a Biomedical Engineering programme in partnership with the Ministry of Health, through the Ndola School of Biomedical Sciences and Ndola Central Hospital.
The institution has since started recruiting the first intake in Biomedical Engineering.
NORTEC principal, Victor Mulenga said this yesterday during the institution’s 22nd graduation ceremony whose theme was, ‘Youth empowerment and job creation through entrepreneurial skills training’.
Mr Mulenga said the college had other plans to introduce a diploma programme in Information Technology (IT) in conjunction with the Copperbelt University.
The college planned to expand the Open Distance and Flexible Learning (ODFL) so that it could offer science and mathematics.
Mr Mulenga also said the institution intended to establish a skills train-the-trainer unit in the near future with the assistance of the Australian Government through the Australian Agency for International Development and TEVETA.
Mr Mulenga said at the moment the college was relatively buoyant financially.
“Infact we have done so well that we are up to date with all our statutory obligations and we will soon be paying all gratuities as they mature,” he said.
He told the graduates that each and every person that reached a point of graduation from the college was someone credible and that the motivation that it took to continue an educational
journey was to be commended.
In welcoming the development, Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education Minister John Phiri commended the institution for introducing new programmes.
He said this in a speech read on his behalf by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Patrick Nkanza.
Dr Phiri encouraged the graduating students to stay away from negative vices such as corruption and other anti-social behaviours which may land them on the other side of the law.
