ARMED police who raided the UPND secretariat this evening finished their search without finding the alleged concealed weapons they were looking for.
The armed officers surrounded the UPND secretariat on Provident Street in Lusaka’s Fairview area in the evening with a search warrant indicating that they were there to look for concealed weapons.
But Lusaka Province police commissioner Nelson Phiri said he was not aware of the search.
“I am not aware about that search, I know nothing,” said Phiri.
And Mazabuka UPND member of parliament Gary Nkombo who arrived later during the search said nothing was found at the premises.
“They searched room by room and they also went further to search a caretaker’s home. But we’re happy to state that they have not found anything, whatsoever,” Nkombo said.
He added that the police had exhibited behavior that was totally unacceptable because their action bordered on infringement of the fundamental human rights and freedoms of the people.
“So, we can say that this search was malicious or if it was not malicious, the police informers are probably peddling information that is not substantiated…,” said Nkombo.
Two police Nissan pick-up vans registration numbers ZP 2467 and ZP 2465 were, in belligerent fashion, parked right in front of the main entrance to the opposition party’s secretariat.
Earlier when the police arrived at the secretariat, they demanded to commence the search immediately but staff insisted that the exercise could not take not take place in the absence of the lawyers.
Over 10 plain clothes police officers conducted the search in the presence of the lawyers while the uniformed and armed cops kept vigil of the premises.
