A MUMBWA-based police officer has been detained for allegedly stealing four guns from the armoury.
The male officer who is a sergeant was found trying to take off with the firearms, which are only released after authorisation from superior officers.
Highly-placed sources said the officer confessed that he got the firearms because he wanted to use them for poaching in the nearby game park.
However, the story did not go well with superiors at Mumbwa Police Station, who felt that the matter was a serious one.
Central Province police chief Standwell Lungu when contacted said he had not received a report and promised to get details at a later stage.
The officer in question, whose name has been withheld has since been transferred from Mumbwa and is been detained at a police station in Lusaka.
Sources said reports of theft of firearms in Mumbwa and surrounding areas has angered the command which has resolved to transfer all officers from stations where guns get stolen.
“A sergeant is being detained for stealing four guns which he says he wanted to use for poaching,” the source said.
