solwezi-zambia-welcome-signSOLWEZI Mayor Ezekiel Mulonga has been impeached and removed from office for misconduct which allegedly brought the council into disrepute.
A full council meeting held at the Solwezi Council Chamber first impeached the mayor and then passed a vote of no confidence in him for alleged misconduct. The meeting was preceded by an ad hoc committee meeting that discussed the full details of misconduct which was not disclosed in the full council chamber meeting where the final vote was taken.
Speaking on behalf of the ad hoc committee, chairman Andrew Kalangwa told the full council that Mr Mulonga had exhibited conduct likely to bring the council into disrepute.
Mr Kalangwa, who is Mumena ward councillor moved that the motion be adopted and implemented as presented.
And Solwezi Town Clerk Venture Kafula accepted the decision by the full council, saying this was within the provisions of the law.
“The council has been hereby notified of the vacancy of the mayor’s office with immediate effect,” he said.
Mr Kafula added that the council would hold elections at the next extraordinary council meeting to fill the vacancy.
He submitted that in the event of a vacancy in the mayor’s office, the deputy mayor was expected to take up all office duties of the mayor pending an election.
Meanwhile, acting mayor Brian Kajoba has urged members of the Solwezi council to remain cordial with Mr Mulonga and not to harbour any ill feeling against him.
“We are here to serve and as such it is vital that even after such a decision, we still accord the former mayor respect and continue working together,” he said.
