WOMEN for Change (WfC) says it is thrilled that the number of women members of Parliament (MPs) has increased following the recently held by-elections in Mulobezi, Malambo and Petauke Central.
WfC executive director Lumba Siyanga said the victory shows that female candidates make good contenders when provided an opportunity and support.
“We are happy that two women candidates emerged victorious out of the three. To this end, we wish to congratulate Dora Siliya and Patricia Mulasikwanda for winning the Petauke Central and Mulobezi seats, respectively,” she said.
Ms Siyanga called on all political parties to adopt more women to contest various elective positions, especially for parliamentary and local government seats in the 2016 elections and beyond.
She said WfC is concerned that women representation in the Zambian Parliament stands at only13.2 percent.
