Lungu Witnesses Inauguration Of New Namibian President

President Lungu was yesterday among several African heads of State who attended and witnessed the inauguration of Namibia’s third democratically elected President Hage Geingob.
Mr Lungu, with other heads of State and former African leaders, also joined the Namibian people in celebrating its silver jubilee.
Former Namibia President Hifikepunye Pohamba said Namibia will forever be indebted to Zambia as one of the countries that were instrumental in helping it gain independence in 1990.
Mr Pohamba also paid tribute to Angola, Tanzania and Cuba for their great contribution to the liberation of Namibia.
The former Namibian leader, who officially handed over the instruments of power to Dr Geingob, was speaking during Independence Day celebrations at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek.
Namibia’s founding father, Sam Nujoma, Zambia’s former leaders Kenneth Kaunda, Rupiah Banda as well as former South Africa President Thabo Mbeki attended the colourful ceremony.
Mr Pohamba said Namibia was in good hands with President Geingob taking over.
“As a country, we cannot celebrate independence without having to single out Zambia, Tanzania, Angola and Cuba for the unwavering support to Namibia’s liberation struggle,” he said.
Other heads of State that attended the ceremony included South Africa’s Jacob Zuma, Angola’s Edwardo dos Santos, Tanzania’s Jakaya Kikwete and Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta.
And Dr Geingob started his inauguration address by quoting Psalm 118:24, “This is the day the Lord has made, we will be glad and rejoice in it.”
The crowds went quiet listening to Dr Geingob as he energetically gave his first speech as Namibia’s commander-in-chief. He said Namibia is friend to all and an enemy of no-one.
The African Union Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Southern Africa Development Community Chairperson Robert Mugabe witnessed the momentous occasion in Namibia.
