THREE boys aged five, nine and 12 have died in separate road accidents in Lusaka and North Western provinces after being hit by vehicles.
And Road Traffic Safety Agency chief executive Zindaba Soko has cautioned motorists that they do not own the roads. According to a statement issued by Police spokesperson Charity Munganga-Chanda, two of the boys were hit as they were crossing the road whilst the other was hit by a GRZ vehicle which tried to avoid a speed hump.
Chanda stated that two of the drivers were in police custody while the other one abandoned the vehicle and was on the run. “The driver of the vehicle which hit the five-year-old abandoned it and fled while the other two are in police custody,” she stated. “The first one involved a five-year-old boy who was hit by a Toyota Land Cruiser Reg. No. AAR 6159 along the Kasempa-Mufumbwe road while the nine-year-old was hit by a Toyota Noah Reg. No. ALB 8984 along an access road in Lusaka’s Chinika area.” Chanda stated that the 12-year-old boy, who was walking on the side of the road on his way from school, was run over by a Toyota Land Cruiser GRZ 666 CE, which was trying to avoid a speed hump along the Solwezi-Chingola road. Meanwhile, Soko warned motorists to be cautious on the roads as they were not the only users. He said the institution would work hand in hand with the police and ensure that the driver on the run is apprehended as they had all registration details in their database. “I am warning all motorists; you are not the only ones who use the roads.
You need to remember that the roads are gazzeted and there are cyclists and pedestrians. As RTSA, we will show no mercy to those who will abrogate the law and that is a promise,” warned Soko.
