New Curriculum ill-Timed For Exam Classes

Dear Editor,

May I begin with congratulating Hon. Michael Kaingu for his appointment as Minister of Education.
Among other issues requiring his serious attention in the education sector, I would like to draw the new minister to the new curriculum being introduced particularly at the junior secondary level.
In the new curriculum, most subjects which were previously taken as options have been merged with similar line subjects to form one. This entails that pupils will be examined in some subjects they never learnt but which will form part of the examination paper.
This will not only be unfair but will not be taken lightly by the pupils and as such, it will be a recipe for violence during the exams. The revised curriculum is in itself good but I find the timing of its introduction to pupils wrong and rather disadvantageous to those in examination classes.
I would suggest that the new curriculum be introduced to those in non- examination classes. May the minister be proactive by investigating the matter and ensuring that correct action is taken at the correct time. Prevention is better than cure!
