THE Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Presidential Candidate Rupiah Banda received an exuberant welcome from thousands of supporters during visits to numerous markets in the Kasama area of Northern Province yesterday.

Among the stops on the campaign tour was a visit to pay respects at the palace of the Paramount Chief Chitimukulu Henry Sosala.

The Chitimukulu reminded all those present that traditional leaders do not formally endorse individuals, but that he “knows who is a good child and who is a bad child, who is lying and who is telling the truth.”

The Paramount Chief continued: “I would like to encourage our people to vote for a genuine person, someone who will unite the country and not divide it.”

In turn Rupiah Banda thanked the Paramount Chief for his warm welcome and the bashilubemba for all their hard work to provide for the palace during times of hardship.

Upon departing the palace, a spontaneous crowd formed cheering and chanting the name the candidate’s name. Rupiah Banda then walked and talked with the people of Mungwi for one and a half kilometres up to the junction, on the way meeting Kasama Member of Parliament Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, whom he hugged and exchanged greetings.

The Rupiah Banda campaign will continue throughout the weekend to spread its message of unity and peace at other locations in the area
