THE construction of over 60 medium-, low- and high-cost houses for civil servants in Choma has reached an advanced stage.
And Government is satisfied with the workmanship on the project.
President Sata relocated the Southern Province administration headquarters from Livingstone to Choma and Government last year embarked on the construction of the houses and a K31 million six-storey provincial administration office building.
Southern Province permanent secretary Anne Sinyangwe told journalists on Tuesday that construction of the houses is progressing well and most of them have been roofed and plastered.
“Government has so far paid K3 million for 30 low-cost houses which are all roofed and plastered. They are almost at 80 percent completion. The first nine actually if it was not for one technical problem, we would have been by now talking of them being completed and being occupied.
“The 20 medium-cost houses which will cost K5 million are also at 50 percent completion, roofed and plastered while two of the 12 high-cost houses which have so far gobbled K1.5 million have already been completed while the rest are also almost complete,” Ms Sinyangwe said.
She said Government is impressed with the workmanship on the project and hopes the houses will be completed soon so that civil servants can have decent accommodation.
Government engaged Golden Horse Limited to construct 30 low-cost houses while 20 medium-cost houses will be built by African Contractor Limited.
World Tech Engineer was engaged to construct 12 high-cost houses.
On the construction of the multi-storey provincial administration office, Ms Sinyangwe said construction of the building has reached second floor level.
He said Government hopes the contractor will expedite the works, which are expected to be completed early next year.
