Contrary to insinuations in some quarters that the government is handling issue of Synagogue Guest House collapse with kid gloves, indications emerged yesterday that Lagos State Government may invoke relevant building control laws in the state in the controversial building collapse that killed over 115 people, while 131 others were rescued in Ikotun area of the state.
Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola hinted this when members of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, led by Commissioner for Physical Planning, Olutoyin Ayinde, paid him a courtesy call in his office at Ikeja, Lagos.
Fashola who said a coroner’s inquest had been instituted by the commissioner for justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, stressed that investigation on the cause and manner of the collapse would continue.
He said, “I think we must understand that our government has repeatedly said we will investigate it. We will definitely do so. Last week, the attorney-general empanelled the coroner’s court because that is the appropriate machinery of the government to undertake this kind of investigation, especially when people die in such tragic or unnatural circumstances.”
