A 23 year old woman of Katete has been burnt to ashes in Petauke after the driver of the vehicle she was travelling ran out of control ,hit a tree and caught fire.
And Eastern Province Police Commissioner Grace Chipalila says cyclists are the major causes of road traffic accidents.
Martha Ngwira of Katete boma met her fate on Friday night after the driver attempted to avoid a pothole.Petauke Police Officer in charge,Robert Ngosa said the driver,Emmanuel Banda,of Petauke sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Petauke District Hospital.Ngosa said the accident occurred in Kawere area about seven kilometers East of Petauke.
He said Banda sustained a fracture in the neck , a cut on the left shoulder and bruises on the left elbow.
Ngosa said the accident was as the result of speeding.The deceased was burnt to ashes in fire,which started after the accident and Chipalila urged cyclist to stop criss-crossing whenever they were on the road .
She said cyclists who do not follow traffic rules caused most of the accidents in the province
“I would like to urge cyclists to ensure they put on helmets and the motorist should reduce speed when they are travelling on the great east road or any other roads where there are other road users,”said Chipalila
